Day 9: Psalm 18:1–2 — I love you, Lord, my strength. The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
When life feels uncertain, do you take refuge in who God is—or in what you can control?
It is so easy to talk about trusting the Lord and taking our stress and anxiety to Him. Can we honestly say that is what we do when the stress hits? Not just when we get the phone call or the really hard news, but also in those small moments when we have a plan and something interrupts that plan.
I have a coworker who is one of the greatest prayer warriors I know. It does not matter what he is doing or how many times he has been interrupted. If he sees the look on my face—the one that betrays my attempts to pretend like I have it all together—he stops what he is doing, and we go to the Lord together. He doesn’t ask what the situation is. He doesn’t consider what we should do to resolve it. He just takes it to the Lord.
As a Type A, Enneagram 1, very task-oriented person, that is not my first instinct. I want to gather information, analyze the situation, identify three or four possible solutions, weigh those solutions, determine which one is the best and move forward. But when I return to David’s words in Psalm 18, I hear a very different response. While I am trying to manufacture security through information, control, planning, and solutions, he finds his security in God—his rock, fortress, deliverer, and stronghold.
Although my natural inclination is to set about the tasks first, I am instead taking steps every day to turn to the One who is the only true source of security, place my trust in Him, and then get to work.
This is just one question from Who Is This King of Glory? Each day includes a second question, room to write the verse itself, and a prayer prompt in the journal. If you would like to sit with the question Who is this King of Glory? a little longer, you can explore the complete journal and take a look inside.
