Moving F.O.R.W.A.R.D. with Grief (Part 8)

D – DIVE INTO GOD’S WORD

Dive into the Word. David had quite a life. He started out as a shepherd boy and then became a king. Over the years, he faced many storms. Some of them he caused, some of them he had no control over. He sinned; he wasn’t perfect. Yet, he is called a man after God’s own heart. Why? Because he constantly sought God.

“You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you; I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water.” Psalm 63:1

It is believed that David penned those words while he was in the desert fleeing from his own son who was trying to kill him. Instead of begging God to fix the problem he was facing, he used this Psalm to express to God how he longed after Him and then to praise Him.

There is nothing more important than seeking God.

“But if from there you seek the Lord your God, you will find him if you seek him with all your heart and with all your soul.”  Deuteronomy 4:29

God promises that if we seek Him, we will find Him. Only He can provide us with comfort and healing. Only He will never leave us nor forsake us. His truths will guide us and protect our hearts from the evil one.

We have talked about the importance of caring for the physical body while we are grieving. Caring for the heart is crucial. We don’t want satan to get even the tiniest of a foothold in our hearts or minds. Immersing ourselves in God’s promises will give us the words of truth that we need to fight the lies that satan tries to tell us.

One of the best ways we can seek God is by spending time in His word every single day. We don’t have to find a formal study or buy the latest book. We only need to long after Him. Don’t underestimate the power of spending just a few minutes a day chewing on a scripture. That is how relationships are built.

When my mom was undergoing chemo treatments, I would spend a good portion of the five hour drive to her house talking to God. The storm we were in was often more than I could bear, and I would recite scripture to God. Some days it was almost as if I were spewing His words back to Him. What I was going through didn’t feel like “I have plans to prosper you and not to harm you.” It didn’t feel like “all things work together for the good of those who love the Lord.”

I started spending more time in scripture. I wanted to find more promises that I could quote back to Him that He didn’t seem to be making good on. As I realized how many of those promises God had fulfilled, slowly, my own heart began to change. No, I might not see all of those promises fulfilled in my lifetime, but I know without a doubt, that God is good, His word is true and Heaven is real.

In the process, my relationship with God became stronger, and I found scriptures that I could cling to. I put those promises into a calendar, one scripture for each day of the year. I have attached them below for anyone who is interested. I pray you find peace and comfort in God’s truths.

What scripture have you found that you cling to?
