Word of the Year Workbook

Do you choose a word of the year and wonder what to do next? More than ten years ago, a friend shared the idea with me of choosing a word of the year. It was a couple of years after our son had run ahead to Heaven, and the grief I was carrying was heavy. I knew that I could not focus on a list of resolutions, but perhaps I could focus on one thing, a word for the year that would help me as I grieved while also drawing me closer to God.

That is exactly what happened. That year, I chose “run your race.” (I have since learned that you are supposed to choose just one word, but at the time, I did not know that.) We were still learning to navigate life without Joshua, and it was a struggle not to compare my life with those around me. Other people seemed so happy, and were sharing about all the ways that God had answered their prayers. We had not been given the answer that we desperately prayed for, and my heart had been shattered. I needed a way to focus, not just on healthy grieving, but also on truth. It is so easy for lies to get a foothold in our hearts and minds when we are hurting. I knew that I was vulnerable to that happening.

After choosing my word, I spent that year digging into scripture, praying, and seeking God and His purpose for this new race that I was running. It was such a meaningful year and made a greater impact on me than any list of resolutions has ever accomplished. For years, I continued to choose a word. Then, I wanted something more, some structure that would help me keep my word in front of me all year. That is when the idea for the word of the year workbook sparked.
