Being referred to as “sheep” has become such an insult. It has become a term that indicates those who blindly follow. Someone who is naive and gullible. Scripture paints a different, quite beautiful picture of a shepherd with his sheep.
“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand.” John 10:27-28
Sheep not only know the voice of the shepherd, they listen to his voice. They follow him because they know that he will guide them to green grass and refreshing water, as well as protect them from any danger on their path.
As our Shepherd, God promises to lead us and guide us. He promises to protect us. Just as sheep are precious to the shepherd, we are precious to our Father. I am not blindly following God. It is a conscious choice that I have made my entire life. I am not naive or gullible. I have watched God work in what appeared to be impossible situations. He has guided me and provided for me; He has protected me.
He also promises that we can’t be taken from Him. In a time where there are concerns about the loss of freedoms, God promises that we can’t be snatched from Him. We are His. Regardless of what decisions are made by our government. Regardless of who is in office. Regardless of the laws and policies that are in place, we are His. No one can take that from me or from you.
I choose to be a sheep and listen to the voice of my Shepherd.
